Towering Success

A new star has risen among the architecture of Sydney’s Central Business District. The 34 storey tower at 8 Chifley is the first completed building in Australia for Rogers’ practice Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners working together with Australia’s own Lippmann Partnerships, with Ed Lippmann at the helm.
The innovative design sees the ground floor open space repeated midway up the building and again at the top, “integrating Australia’s outdoor lifestyle into the city environment” says Lippmann. Each of the three open spaces is illuminated with Lumino’s Vector V12 linear led including the top 30-34th floor gardens.
Lumino’s Vector V12 IP67 was specified by Arup working together with Lumino’s local partner Light Project. “The highly efficient 3800K White Spectrum LEDs within a very slim IP67 profile made the Vector V12 a great choice for this project” said Hamish Little, Light Project Sydney. Lumino MD Andrew Small commented “Richard Rogers is a world renowned British architect and it is an honour for Lumino to have been chosen to supply our Vector linear led to this prestigious project in Sydney Australia”.

Described in mond*arc, Lighting designers Tim Carr and Tim Hunt from Arup worked with Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners to illuminate the exposed concreted slabs and roof features with the Vector V12 integrated linear LED. By day these are hidden within the exposed structure, at night they enliven the fabric of the building; reversing shadows caused in the day to create luminous soffits.
“From the start we wanted to provide a uniform effect on the soffits of the reverse podium, level 18 and the roof to both create an inviting atmosphere for people, and advertise these amazing volumes to the city.” said Arup’s Tim Carr while Tim Hunt added “We focused on lighting the soffits to reveal the volume of the architecture and the openness of the space.” Read a great interview where Tim Carr and Tim Hunt from Arup explain their design process for 8 Chifley in detail at illumni.co.

“8 Chifley offers 21st century communal work spaces while also celebrating the great outdoors. At its base, it extends Chifley Square and we hope it will create a great public plaza in the heart of the Sydney CBD,” said Ivan Harbour, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. Commenting on the extremely high energy efficiency of the building, Ed Lippmann made a point of saying that 8 Chifley will be one of the greenest buildings in Sydney, achieving a 6 Star Green Star Office Design v2 certified rating representing “world Leadership” in environmentally sustainable design.
